[I] Civ IV World Map [message #237560] Do, 16 März 2006 16:39

Hi all

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but during a rare break for
beer during a Civ IV session the other day, I wondered about using the
World Builder feature to try to generate Discworld from ye Discworld
Map. A couple of thoughts:

1. Has anyone beaten me to it? I would propbably go ahead for the fun
anyway, but maybe some tips would be nice!

2. This would be for own use only, anybody think of any copyright issues
I may hit?

best

Dunno. I used to have Civ III installed, played for a couple of hours
then wiped it. I've got too much else to do, to let myself be immersed
in a game like that.

If it's only for your own use, and you own a copy of the DW Map, and you
will not make it available to anybody else, ever, then there are still
copyright issues. I believe the little booklet attached carries the
same note as any other book, prohibiting the reproduction of any of the
material in any form, including digital/electronic.

That's the legal aspect.

Pragmatically speaking, that's not that much of an issue, and the word
"reproduction" is one that leaves a bit of wrangle room. How far from
the original would you have to be for it to be considered "inspired by"
rather than a "reproduction", for instance?

If you don't make it available to anybody else, there isn't really a
moral issue, even though it might be, strictly speaking, a legal one,
albeit one that is very unlikely to have any repercussions. If you want
to make it available to somebody else, there will be heaps of legal
issues.

BICBW, IANAL, etc.

What you should do is send a polite note to Terry's agent, Colin Smythe
(CPSmythe [at] aol.com), and ask his advice. So far, it seems that Terry's
attitude is that as long as people are sensible and polite, fan projects
like this are not an issue, and it's very likely they'd say that you can
go ahead, no worries mate.

But this is one of those cases where it's a lot better to ask for
permission first rather than forgiveness later.

I tried it with CivII on a 100x100 map, but I basically only got the
Counterweight Continent, The Hub, the Ramtops, the Sto Plains and
Circle Sea before petering out. I was going to set up the scenario
that Lord Hong's Counter Revolution succeeded to play on the map, and
even got the unit stats and images worked out.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/ is the best place to have a look for
previous efforts - and a quick skeet reveals maps for Civ II and Civ
III Conquests.

I'm not sure about any legal issues... is it any different to fan art?
There is an invitation to 'draw your own' in one of the books... but
basing it on Ye Mappe might be a different matter.

Rob, feverishly waiting for Civ IV to be available on the Mac - at the
moment 'early 2006' means 'June or later' :-s

The invitation to draw your own map is in (I think) Sourcery, the
fifth book. The Mappe was published sometime after Men At Arms (the
fourteenth book).
